‘When life puts you in tough situations, don’t say ‘why me’ say ‘try me'.'
If you’re a regular London tube commuter, you will probably be familiar with quotes like this. They appear all over the tube network, written by staff members as a Thought of the Day.
It all began at Oval Station in 2004, when Tube worker Anthony Gentles decided to cheer up stressed commuters by writing an inspirational quote up on the station’s notice board.
It’s been so popular that it’s been adopted across the network, and even become infamous around the world.
The station’s twitter page has 35,500 followers from as far away as France, Malaysia and Australia.
Anthony’s colleague Glen Sutherland has since taken up the role of creating the quotes, ensuring Londoners get a daily dose of inspiration, love and resilience in the face of tragedy.
After tragic events, such as the Westminster terror attacks, Oval’s Thought of the Day is always there to bring together Londoner’s in a time of need.
We’ve put a few of Tube Talk’s favourites below from station’s across London:
Angel Station
“Accept that some days you are the pigeon. And some days you are the statue.”
Brixton Station
“Life is like a camera, focus on what’s important, capture the good times, develop from the negative, and if things don’t work out take another shot.”
Oval Station
“Never ignore a person who cares for you. Because someday you’ll realise you’ve lost a diamond when you were busy collecting stones.”
